The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed it will axe a large number of staff in its procurement division.

An MoD spokesman said staff numbers at Defence Equipment and Support will reduce significantly over the next four years. He added . gures have not yet been announced and a recent news report, which said 9,000 of the 28,000 staff would lose their jobs, was false.

He said since its establishment in April, following the merger of the Defence Procurement Agency and Defence Logistics Organisation, it has been considering ways to improve efficiency and job cuts will help.

The Public and Commercial Services Union said: "If job cuts are in their thousands procurement will be affected. This will have a knock-on effect on efficient procurement for front-line troops."

  • Lord Drayson, the minister for defence procurement, resigned last week to enter the American Le Mans Series motor races. He has been replaced by Baroness Ann Taylor, the new minister for defence equipment and support
