United Utilities aims to improve its purchasing function with the appointment of E.ON UK supply chain head Colin Davis.

As the firm's new head of supply chain, Davis will take charge of "major capital programmes", including reservoirs and water treatment. He left E.ON UK as director of supply chain, where he said he had a "great" four-and-a-half years.

"It's important to know as a leader what to do, but also when to stop. I believe leadership has a shelf life of effectiveness," he told SM.

He said the United Utilities role would provide him with an exciting challenge. "It is beefing up its procurement expertise and investing in development. In recent years the company has developed some talented people and it is the sort of environment anyone would want to work in."

During his time at E.ON UK, he helped the company clinch the top prize at the 2007 CIPS SM Awards (News, 4 October 2007).
