US-based logistics firm UPS is to include gay and lesbian-owned vendors as part of its supplier diversity programme.

Suppliers certified by the US National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce can register with the company's diversity initiative, which gives minority-owned firms an equal footing with other suppliers.

Lisa Johnson, procurement and supplier diversity manager at UPS, said the firm had a very strong philosophy on supporting minority suppliers, and gay and lesbian-owned firms were the latest to come under its "diversity umbrella".

"We don't claim to be on the cutting edge with the decision because this kind of support is very well established in the US, but we're excited and looking forward to working with the suppliers," she told SM.

Kathy Homeyer, director, supplier diversity at the company, said: "We want to educate and develop all our suppliers."
