A potential merger between two NHS suppliers of patient entertainment systems has been called off.

Vendors Hospedia and Premier Telesolutions supply bedside entertainment and communication systems to hospitals. Patientline, the system operated by Hospedia, controls around 70 per cent of the market and Premier is the firm's biggest competitor.

The planned tie-up between the two companies was referred to the Competition Commission (CC) by the Office of Fair Trading following concerns there would be a reduction in competition if the firms merged (Law briefs, 30 October).

The CC has now cancelled its inquiry after Hospedia terminated the agreement to join together. Premier added the merger could not continue following its referral to the CC.
