The popularity of social networking websites does not extend to their use in the procurement profession, according to the latest SM100 poll.

It found that 60 per cent of buyers do not use sites such as Facebook or MySpace, or their more business-orientated counterparts such as LinkedIn and Plaxo.

Although many buyers have signed up to these sites, often they were not actively using them, particularly in their careers. The majority claimed that they preferred traditional methods of relationship building.

Those that do use social networking sites said it enhanced their visibility in a positive way, both within the profession and with suppliers. Others mentioned them as a resource to share knowledge with peers.
