Clothing company SuperGroup aims to increase its supply chain efficiency, having recruited a head of sourcing and a head of logistics for the first time.

The UK retailer, which owns the Superdry brand, has rapidly increased revenues from £7.1 million to £90.5 million over the past five years, and now wants to improve its supply chain operations to boost profitability.

Peter Bamford, chairman of SuperGroup, wrote in the company’s annual report published this week: “In order to run our business efficiently, improvements are required to our IT systems and to our merchandising, sourcing and supply chain processes.”

These improvements includes the recruitment of Shaun Packe as head of sourcing, who joined the firm this month having led a purchasing team at Asda, and Tim Owrid, previously supply chain director at Waterstone’s, who will start as the company’s head of logistics on 30 August.

A spokesman for SuperGroup told SM: “Shaun will be looking at a number of areas within our business. For example making sure that we have the necessary supply base to support growth internationally, ensuring that we maximise leverage with suppliers and that we instigate clearer supply chain processes with our suppliers. “

The company attributed 2 per cent of a 3.3 per cent rise in profit margin last year to an improved supply chain. In addition to increasing expertise within the company, the retailer also increased its supplier numbers to 47 from 33 in 2010. The group also expanded its distribution centre by 77,000 square feet, with the extra storage space enabling them to offer better delivery options for online shoppers.
