The supply chain chief at US grocery giant Supervalu has been given extra responsibility as executive vice president for merchandising and logistics.

Janel Haugarth, chief operating officer of the company's supply chain services since 2006, will continue to oversee these operations. In her additional new role she will lead merchandising activities across the company's retail businesses.

Haugarth has replaced Steve Jungmann, who left the company last week. Haugarth has been with Supervalu for more than 30 years and will report directly to Craig Herkert, chief executive officer and president of Supervalu.

Herkert said: "This new structure will enable us to better leverage our scale with the supplier community and meet our customers' needs with the right products at the right time and at the right price.”

He added: “Janel is a proven industry leader, with a strong track record for delivering results. Janel's experience working closely with both suppliers and independent retailers gives her a unique point of view in our industry.”

Supervalu has 4,280 stores in the US and estimated annual sales of $38 billion (£24.3 billion).
