Surrey County Council expects to save £10 million by agreeing better deals with 30 main suppliers.
The local authority is asking
its major suppliers, who collectively receive £250 million of the authority’s
£680 million annual budget, to “share the pain” of the economic climate and
council funding cuts.
The council expects its talks with
suppliers to achieve savings of £10 million over 18 months.
Surrey County Council deputy
leader David Hodge said: “This programme covers every service we provide and
will ensure we get the best deal from contracts we sign or hold in terms of our
bottom line and the benefit to our residents. We are looking to work with our
suppliers to find ways of providing goods and services more efficiently and do
not expect to pay inflationary increases on contracts over the coming year.”
He added: “It is vital that all
public bodies truly get value for money for taxpayers and in the current
economic climate we are asking suppliers to play their part in sharing the
In July 2010, Surrey launched a
three-year programme to review all services the council provides to ensure they
give value for money.
The council’s latest actions
build on its award-winning success in replacing or upgrading all 89,000 of
Surrey’s streetlights, which saved the council hundreds of thousands of pounds
a year. The lighting project won the best public procurement category in the CIPS Supply Management Awards
in September 2010.
