Global brewer Molson Coors has joined the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) to help ensure its vendors fulfil its responsible sourcing principles.

MolsonCoors Brewing Company and joint venture MillerCoors signed an agreement to join Sedex, a secure global database for companies to store and share ethical data about their suppliers with one another, including self-assessments and supplier audits. Ethical data could include information on health and safety, labour standards, business integrity and the environment.

Suppliers are also asked to contribute compliance progress reports to the central database. Molson Coors and MillerCoors have asked manufacturing suppliers to their North American breweries to use the tool this year. Suppliers who have already agreed to participate include Cargill Corn Milling North America and Ball Corporation.

Greg Wade, global chief supply chain officer for Molson Coors, said joining Sedex will help the brewer better manage important issues in its supply chain. “By working with a third party to ensure our suppliers adhere to our high standards of sourcing principles we are taking a significant step to embed corporate responsibility into our global procurement process,” he said.

Carmel Giblin, general manager of Sedex, said: “It opens the door to a robust exchange of data that will ultimately help Molson Coors and MillerCoors and their suppliers shape their ethical supply chain strategy. The collaborative approach to collecting, managing, analysing and reporting on supplier data helps streamline the auditing process and drives improvements in the supply chain.”
