Price of a Christmas dinner falls 5 per cent

The wholesale price of a Christmas dinner has fallen 5 per cent this year, according to Mintec.

Following three years of price increases, less demand for turkey and good growing conditions for vegetables in 2014 have lowered costs, though prices are still higher than at Christmas 2011.

Mintec said the price of turkey had fallen to around £2.86/kg, despite a drop in production, because of “our desire to expand our eating horizons and look for other meats as an alternative”.

Potato prices have decreased 22 per cent year-on-year due to a bumper harvest, while parsnips have fallen 21 per cent, onions by 45 per cent and sprouts by 15 per cent. Carrot prices have increased slightly over the year but are down on average compared to 2013, due in main to an increase in planted area.

The cost of pigs in blankets has dropped as the price of pork has fallen to around £1.46/kg, against the background of a ban on EU pork by Russia, which accounted for around 25 per cent of EU exports in 2013, following the discovery of swine flu in Poland and Lithuania.
