NSW government acts to boost SME access to public contracts

The government of New South Wales in Australia has announced greater opportunities for SMEs to bid for public contracts.

Under a change which came into effect on 1 July, state agencies are now required to look for at least one quote from an SME for contracts worth up to AUS$1 million (£547,000). This will cover around $1 billion (£547 million) worth of deals.

“Since 2011, we’ve introduced a number of changes to make it easier for businesses in regional NSW to gain work with the government. Under NSW procurement’s SME policy, government agencies located in non-metropolitan areas can purchase goods and services up to AUS$5,000 (£2,737) (including goods and services tax) directly from local suppliers, without having to go through whole-of-government contracts,” said Dominic Perrottet, minister for finance and services.

“Not only does this help make it simpler and quicker for agencies to procure goods and services, but it also means that they are able to support local businesses in the communities they reside.”

New South Wales spends around AUS$15 billion (£8.2 billion) a year on goods and services.
