Public sector contractors must have “strong and effective” whistle-blowing policies, a report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has found.
An investigation into adopting a positive approach to whistle-blowing found public sector workers who have information are often unclear on who to raise their concerns with.
The PAC reiterated comments from a previous report on contracting public services when it said there is a “lack of effective arrangements for whistle-blowers employed by private companies delivering public services with the taxpayer’s pound”.
It added: “Legislation has enabled contractors to nominate someone in the contracting department as a person to whom whistle-blowers can make authorised disclosures, but none of the four contractors we examined for that report had done so.”
PAC chairman and Labour MP Margaret Hodge added: “All government employees should be provided with a route map that shows how to report issues internally and externally. Private and third sector contractors to the public sector must also be obliged to have strong and effective whistle-blowing policies in place.”
