The Dubai Chamber has partnered with online marketplace Alibaba to launch a portal to help suppliers win deals for Dubai Expo 2020.

The system has been tailored for sourcing for both Expo 2020 and Qatar World Cup 2022, with five categories of spend: building materials, consumer electronics, machinery, fashion, and apparel.

It is claimed the Mega Sourcing 2020 portal will be the largest such system in the region, offering opportunities worth $42 billion (£26.7 billion).

“Our partnership with Alibaba.com for the Middle East and North Africa region offers our members elite benefits to help them increase export opportunities and facilitate trade through e-commerce,” said Hisham Al Shirawi, second vice chairman of the Dubai Chamber.

“It also opens the doors of opportunities for MENA companies to explore the business potential of different markets and allows them to display and sell their goods and services to global companies.”

He added the total value of e-commerce in the UAE was estimated to rise from $2.5 billion (£1.6 billion) currently to $10 billion (£6.4 billion) by 2018.
