Shell has introduced an initiative to make the sourcing process more transparent and easier for ethnic minority and female-owned businesses and smaller potential suppliers.
The Shell Diverse Supplier Pipeline Management System, developed by the Shell Supplier Diversity programme, aims to make the sourcing process more efficient for potential suppliers that are small, or owned by women or ethnic-minorities. The system will also track the progress made by diverse businesses introduced to Shell stakeholders.
When a Shell employee meets a supplier who may fit the company’s procurement needs, the technology will record basic information about the supplier into the Supplier Pipeline database and send the potential vendor a web link to provide additional information.
“The system allows us to route the supplier's information to the appropriate contacts within Shell or our prime suppliers and follow their progress through the procurement process with the support of automation,” said Debra Stewart, director for supplier diversity, workforce development and diversity outreach at Shell.
"This makes for a more efficient and effective sales process for potential suppliers,” she added. “Shell recognises that potential suppliers invest a lot of time in their business development efforts with large corporations. We believe that by streamlining and simplifying things on our end, we can ultimately improve our interaction and turnaround time with potential suppliers that are a good fit for Shell.”
