CIPS, NAS and City of London Corporation launch Advanced Apprenticeship in Procurement

8 April 2015

The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) in conjunction with CIPS and the City of London Corporation have launched the Advanced Apprenticeship in Procurement to improve skills within the sector and raise its profile among school and university leavers.

As part of the Institute’s campaign to promote procurement as a career choice to young people, the Level 3 Apprenticeship will cover technical areas and boost core skills such as numeracy and literacy. The three-year qualification includes the CIPS Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Procurement and Supply Operations, a Level 3 Diploma in Procurement & Supply offered by ABC Awards or Gateway Qualifications that assesses workplace competence, and Level 2 functional skills in English, maths and ICT.

“We’d like young people to think about procurement as a career option and not just fall into it,” said Emma Scott, CIPS’ representation manager, at the launch in Livery Hall, London.

“One of our biggest challenges is selling it as a non-traditional apprenticeship.”

Barbara Hamilton, head of Adult Community Learning, Community & Children’s Services at the City of London Corporation, said the apprenticeship will help raise the quality of candidates and provide young people with a respected qualification in an interesting  field.

“We are confident this development will represent a game-changer in the industry and more young people will consider procurement as a viable career option,” she added.

This comes as apprenticeships in England move away from complicated framework systems to high-quality simplified standards for specific apprenticeships designed by employers.

CIPS is calling on employers to join a working group to create a Level 4 apprenticeship standard for procurement. Organisations that would like to be involved in the development of the standard or would consider employing apprentices at Level 4, can email to register interest.
