CIPS Fellow and former chairman of the Derbyshire and South Yorkshire branches, Geoff Simpson, passed away on 26 May.
He spent over 25 years as a procurement professional with British Rail, joining as part of its supplies management training scheme. Following two years of practical and academic work (leading to his MCIPS) he moved to British Rail Engineering Ltd and for 13 years was involved in positions supporting manufacturing and maintenance operations and later the implementation of major IT applications.
Geoff left BR in 1996 as the divisional purchasing manager, British Railways Board, with his responsibilities including managing teams in connection with a national procurement operation involving a £150 million annual budget for plant and equipment and acquisition and maintenance of a fleet of 10,000 road vehicles.
An “excellent networker”, Geoff “worked tirelessly to bring procurement people together”, said Mike Mari, committee representative, Derbyshire branch.
He lectured at Doncaster College delivering CIPS qualifications and since 2004 was an independent consultant delivering NVQs in supply chain management for Achilles Consulting & Training and Qube Vocational Development.
