Darlington College is the second further education college to have begun offering optional procurement units to 16-19 year-olds undertaking the level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Business.
A CIPS Centre of Merit, it echoes St Helens College in providing the two units: Unit 28 Principles of Procurement and Supply and Unit 29 Implementing Procurement and Supply in Business.
Taking the procurement units, which were developed by CIPS and publisher Pearson, will enable students to achieve the CIPS Certificate in Procurement and Supply Operations.
Esther Redman, CIPS’ Education Network Manager, visited the college and found that the students felt the diploma was well-structured and enjoyed the additional challenges that the optional procurement units presented them.
“Learners commented that the units made them think differently about what they were learning as it was a subject that was largely unfamiliar to them and came with its own unique terminology which the group had to get used to,” she added.
Dylan, who started the course in September, said: “It’s an option for a career that I would definitely consider,” while fellow student Hannah added: “Everything in business links with procurement. Business is like a cycle with procurement as the common factor.”
