Alan Hartley and Maria Beattie were named professional and young professional of the year at the CIPS Supply Management Awards last night.

Hartley, who recently joined Signature Living, and Beattie, who works for Network Rail, each beat four other rivals for the prize in their respective categories at this year’s ceremony, which recognises the best in the procurement and supply chain profession.

Hartley won the professional of the year title for his work as group head of procurement at uranium enrichment company Urenco where he led a three-year transformation project that saved €165 million, leading senior executives to describe him as a “visionary” and “ambassador of change within the company”.

According to the judges: “Stakeholders acknowledge that through his leadership, procurement has led the way in changing business culture, and that it has a significant role to play as a true business partner.”

Beattie, who joined the rail infrastructure operator as a graduate, was recognised for her work on the organisation’s contingent labour agreements, with a potential value of £1.2 billion. As part of this project she developed a code of conduct for contingent labour suppliers – supported by CEO Mark Carne – which is now used by all suppliers providing labour on or to infrastructure.

The judges said: “Maria bowled us over with her enthusiasm and passion for the procurement profession and the results, which can be developed.”

National Grid was named overall winner in the team categories at the Grosvenor House Hotel event in London. AirPlus International was the headline sponsor of the event, Hays Procurement was the platinum sponsor and Commerce Decisions returned as official technology provider for the judging.
