The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has pledged to increase the percentage of renewable energy sources used in the city.
At the end of 2015 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai announced the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which says 7% of Dubai’s energy will be provided from clean sources by 2020, 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050.
Dubai said it was the only city in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) to have a renewable energy strategy based on specific targets and deadlines.
DEWA CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer attended the opening of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) and said that DEWA had surpassed last year’s targets for renewable energy in Dubai.
Al Tayer highlighted the importance of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is the largest single-site solar project in the world.
The park, which will cost AED50 billion, is set to produce 1,000MW of power by 2020 and 5,000MW by 2030 and reduce over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Al Tayer said that oil price fluctuations had made conventional energy less attractive for investment than renewable energy.
Other renewable energy-based initiatives in Dubai include the £94m DEWA Innovation Centre, which is due to open in 2017 and will showcase latest solar energy based technologies and the £19bn Dubai Green Fund which will provide loans for investors in the clean energy sector.
DEWA is also investing in programmes concerning that concern green building regulations, retrofitting existing buildings, district cooling, wastewater reuse, laws and standards to raise efficiency, energy-efficient street-lighting, and Shams Dubai, an initiative to regulate the generation of solar energy in buildings. The city aims to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021.
DEWA said its efforts in energy efficiency meant losses in power transmission and distribution networks had been reduced to 3.26%, compared to 6-7% in Europe and the USA while water network losses decreased to 9.1%, compared to 15% in North America.
