Remote-controlled drone ships will be plying the sea lanes without crews by the end of the decade, according to Rolls-Royce which is leading a consortium to develop the technology needed to put these drones into service.

Sweden

Researchers at Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology have created a transparent wood that could be mass made to replace glass in windows, facades and solar cells.

US

A duck that lost its feet to frostbite will be able to waddle again thanks to school teacher Vicki Rabe-Harrison and a 3D printer. The duck has now joined a sanctuary north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

China

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi Corp is testing a smartphone-controlled rice cooker as part of a new household products sub-brand, Mi Ecosystem, which it expects to generate $1.5bn in revenue.

Colombia

In a bid to reconnect severely disadvantaged areas, Medellín has invested $6.7m in a system of outdoor elevators which extend a half mile up steep hills and feature several small plazas.

Kenya

Tesco has begun a partnership with Kenyan bean producers to avoid 135 tonnes of edible fine bean crop from going to waste each year. It has revised its policy of beans needing to be within a specific size range.

India

Mahindra & Mahindra has launched its E2O electric car in the UK. Eschewing traditional dealership models, the Indian car manufacturer has set-up an all-digital approach including mobile vans for servicing.
