Quest for efficiency drives rise in procurement vacancies

The number of UK procurement and supply chain roles rose by 43% in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year as firms prepare for Brexit.

Mid level management positions made up the largest percentage of new vacancies, accounting for over a third (36%), while one in four new roles was for a junior buyer, according to the Robert Walters UK Jobs Index

Efficiency drives were the main catalyst for the growth, said Neil Morgan, manager at Robert Walters. “Improving the efficiency of supply chain and procurement functions has been an ongoing priority for employers in the UK, particularly in the face of economic and political uncertainty in 2016,” he said.

Businesses are also hiring procurement professionals to help develop Brexit strategies. With Britain likely to enter into a new trade relationship with Europe, businesses are aware they need to revise procurement strategies, said Morgan.

“This will require supply chain and procurement professionals with the skills and experience to quickly identify new opportunities and act to capitalise on them in order for firms to stay competitive,” he said.

The CIPS/Hays Salary Guide, launched earlier this month, found procurement salaries had grown for the third consecutive year, outstripping the average UK salary increase. On average procurement professionals saw a 5.3% pay increase in 2016, compared to a national average of 2.2%.

It also found 70% of managers surveyed expected to recruit in the next 12 months, up 6% on the previous year.
