Tesco offers mini avocados to stop food waste

23 August 2017

Tesco is selling mini avocados branded as “Zilla Eggs” as part of efforts to cut food waste.

Tesco told SM it had bought 60,000 egg-sized avocados, which is it selling in egg-style boxes of half a dozen each.

The name derives from the giant avocados, which are branded “Avozilla” in the store and are 24 times larger than the mini avocados. Normal avocados are three times larger than the egg-sized versions.

A spokesman said the avocados had been purchased from a South African supplier, though he refused to confirm reports in The Guardian that the avocados are smaller than normal because of the extended drought in the country.

“This summer we undertook to buy the whole crop. There will always be some that are smaller or larger, or wonky in some way,” he said.

Tesco said traditionally these smaller avocados would have been rejected by growers due to their size. The retailer said this was its latest move to work with suppliers so that no edible food goes to waste.

Tesco avocado buyer James Cantoni said: “At Tesco we’re passionate about working in partnership with our suppliers to tackle food waste from farm to fork.

“These Zilla Eggs are a brilliant way to offer customers great tasting, high quality avocados, which previously would have been rejected by growers because of their size.

“They are perfect for customers who want to snack, without the usual fuss or worry of wasting the other half of the avocado. And it also helps producers who are able to sell even more of their avocado crop.”

Demand for avocados – spurred by the popularity of dishes such as avocado on toast – has soared by more than 30% last year.

Tesco said it hoped its trial would widen the fruit’s appeal even further. The avocados are available in 100 stores and are priced at £2 for a box of six fruit weighing around 70g each.
