Buyers: Enjoy a better life in New Zealand

Procurement professionals looking to re-locate to a warmer climate, somewhere with spectacular national parks and a better work-life balance, have been encouraged to consider New Zealand.

The country is suffering a chronic shortage of highly skilled procurement professionals and the government has added the occupation to a list of desirable skills for migrants, making them eligible for special visas providing fast-tracked routes to residency.

As more businesses recognise the cost savings procurement can make, the role has gained prominence, said Jason Walker, managing director of the recruitment firm Hays New Zealand. “Organisations in all industries want to become more profitable and efficient and are interested in improving their supply chain management.”

Procurement manager is the only job role in the business and finance category of the government’s long-term skills shortage list. This is part of a wider “shortage of highly skilled and experienced professionals in many industries and sectors” in New Zealand, said Walker.

However, “if you are considering relocating to New Zealand, remember it is highly skilled and experienced professionals who are sought,” he added. The list only includes professionals with a level six CIPS graduate or professional diploma and at least five years’ experience.

For those who have the necessary qualifications, the country offers a high standard of living. “New Zealanders work hard but have achieved a work-life balance that’s the envy of many people around the world. From spectacular national parks to rural open spaces, there’s so much natural beauty to explore and we make sure we have the time to go out and enjoy it,” said Walker.

“Life is generally less stressed in New Zealand, communities are uncrowded, the people are easy going and we have great education and healthcare systems.”
