In his keynote address to the National Retail Federation (NRF) Big Show in New York, president and CEO Matthew Shay gave an upbeat welcome to incoming US president Donald Trump.
Describing Trump as the first “retail president” since Harry Truman, Shay said “change and disruption” were positive forces.
“We're seeing changes we never thought we'd see... and there's a lot for us in it, including regulatory reform, infrastructure investment, tax reform and healthcare changes.
“Everyone is chomping at the bit,” said Shay.
Talking at the same event Sir Richard Branson used the example of the failure of Virgin Megastores to inspire retailers to think of themselves as “entrepreneurs rather than forever retailers”.
Without the record store business Virgin would never have diversified into mobile, games, broadband and signing bands, the Virgin boss told delegates.
The NRF Big Show is the retail world's biggest annual event bringing together 33,000 attendees, 510 exhibitors and 300 speakers.
