Coca-Cola will use brands as 'force for good'

The European arm of the Coca-Cola Company has announced new targets to reduce sugar in drinks, cut water use and collect all used packaging.

The Coca-Cola Company in Western Europe and Coca-Cola European Partners, the world’s largest bottler in sales terms, have together produced This is Forward, a plan to “address some of the biggest issues in society by using their business and brands as a force for good”.

The plan includes by 2025 ensuring 50% of sales come from low or no calorie drinks, up from 35% in 2016, and reducing sugar in drinks across the range by at least 10% by 2020, on top of the 5% achieved in the past five years.

The companies aim to collect 100% of packaging and increase the use of recycled plastic in bottles to at least 50%, up from 21% in 2016. They plan to ensure 100% of packaging is recyclable or reusable by 2025.

There are also targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and cut the amount of water used in manufacturing by 20% by 2025. By 2020, there is a target to ensure 100% of the “main agricultural ingredients and raw materials” come from sustainable sources.

Meanwhile, the plan includes a target to make sure at least 40% of management roles are held by women by 2025.

Tim Brett, President of The Coca-Cola Company in Western Europe, said: “Sustainability has always been at the heart of our business, and we have made some tremendous progress. But we agree we can do more.

“This is Forward defines our attitude to doing better. We are not going to settle for the way things were done. There is no going back now.”
