A deal has been signed between Malaysia and Indonesia to jointly develop an ASEAN car.

A memorandum of agreement (MOA), signed by the Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) and the Indonesia Automotive Institute (IOI), covers areas including “supply chain development to enhance the capabilities of vendors”.

The MOA ceremony was witnessed by Malaysian minister of trade and industry YB Darrell Leiking and Gusti Putu Suryawireawan, director general for international industrial access and development in the Ministry of Industry, Indonesia.

The MOA also covers human capital, market expansion and research collaboration on technologies including biodiesel, hybrid, electric and next-generation vehicles.

“The areas of collaboration within the MOA are geared towards the preparation of the supply chain through the enhancement of product, process and research capabilities, to be followed by the development of an ASEAN car,” said the MAI.

In March MAI and IOI organised a joint business matching programme between Malaysian and Indonesian automotive vendors to identify potential business partners for greater market access in both countries.

“This [MOA is a testament to strong bilateral economic relationships between Malaysia and Indonesia,” said Leiking.

MAI CEO Dato’ Madani Sahari said: “MAI and IOI will continue to support and facilitate partnerships between Malaysian and Indonesian vendors through various developmental programmes to enhance the capabilities of the supply chain.”
