Uber Freight launches app for shippers

22 August 2018

Uber Freight has launched an app in the US it says will allow shippers to quickly and transparently tender loads.

The app will allow shippers to place loads directly onto the Uber Freight platform, removing the need to go through a traditional time-consuming freight booking process.

Uber Freight launched just over a year ago with an app that allows drivers to book loads. But before yesterday’s launch of the shipping app, shippers wanting to place loads onto Uber Freight needed to go through Uber’s dedicated team, who would manually post loads onto the carrier app.

Uber said the launch of the shipping app was a first step towards automating this process.

The shipping app, which is currently only available on desktops, is available for businesses of all sizes. However, Uber said it expects it to be particularly beneficial for SMEs that do not have their own systems in place to automatically tender loads, making them reliant on brokerage firms – a process Uber said is time consuming and can lead to price fluctuations.

Through the app shippers will be able to upload tenders and receive an instant, guaranteed quote. Once they have selected a price, the load is automatically pushed onto the carrier app.

An Uber spokesperson told SM: “For the smaller mom and pop shops who are moving a couple of loads a week, just being able to input [loads] onto a desktop and get that instant pricing and have it instantly inputted into the carrier app is pretty transformational and will ultimately help them become more efficient.”

Shippers using the app will also be able to benefit from real-time freight tracking and automated document management.
