Sainsbury’s procurement lead adds property management to portfolio

26 October 2018

Sainsbury’s chief procurement officer Patrick Dunne’s role has expanded to take on responsibility for group property, SM has learned.

Dunne joined supermarket group Sainsbury’s in January this year as director of group procurement and cost base transformation. His new role is director of group property, procurement and cost base transformation.

He was previously CPO at Walgreens Boots Alliance, where he also had responsibility for property.

Chief financial officer Kevin O’Byrne said: “Bringing together the procurement and property teams with our ambitious cost transformation plans under one leader will help us to be even more successful in these important areas.”

Dunne, who was this year named on the Procurement Power List, told SM he was “very proud to have been asked to lead such an important area for Sainsbury’s”.

“It’s nice also for our profession to see procurement being recognised with such an expansive and important commercial role,” he added.

Earlier this year, Sainsbury’s announced planned to merge with Asda. The proposed deal would mean the new supermarket group becoming the largest in the UK by market share.

The merger would also mean that Argos, which was taken over by Sainsbury’s in 2016 and integrated into a number of its stores, would open concessions inside some Asda supermarkets.

The proposed merger is currently being investigated by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which launched a formal investigation into the impact of the deal on shoppers and suppliers this August. Both supermarkets requested that the inquiry be fast-tracked, moving straight into a full investigation.
