China is largest clean coal power producer

13 February 2019

China is the world’s largest clean coal power generator, achieving energy conservation and low emissions targets outlined in the country's 13th Five-Year Plan.

According to the National Energy Administration (NEA) data, over 75% of its total coal power generating capacity uses ultra-low emission technology.

In January, the NEA and the National Development and Reform Commission launched a guideline on China’s clean energy consumption to tighten environmental regulations and increase production efficiency by 2020.

China is the world’s largest producer of coal, according to the Japanese Institute of Energy Economics (JIEE). In a report on China’s coal industry, it said that around half of its coal-fired power development is consumed domestically. Coal use accounts for one fourth of all pollution, the report said.

Clean coal power plants have been developed through technology that reduces or removes polluting emissions, such as sulphur dioxide, and increases overall efficiency of energy production.

By end 2018, coal power generators with ultra-low emission in China reached more than 750 million kilowatts. Renewable power generation capacity reached 728 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 12%, and representing 38.3% of all installed capacity, according to the NEA.

The NEA said that throughout 2019 China will “continue to implement the "four revolutions, one cooperation" new energy security strategy, focusing on the non-fossil energy share of energy consumption to reach 15% by 2020 and 20% by 2030, to promote renewable as a fundamental requirement for high-quality energy development.”

According to the International Energy Agency, “unabated coal generation needs to decrease by 5.6% per year until 2030 to meet the Sustainable Development Scenario target (SDS)”.
