Nestlé and Veolia partner on global plastic recycling scheme

Nestlé is collaborating with Veolia to implement a global recycling programme as part of action under the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW).

Nestlé and waste management company Veolia have formed a partnership to work on waste collection, sorting and recycling of plastic waste in 11 countries.

Technologies that enable effective methods of recycling and contribute to the circular plastics economy principle will be explored, including chemical recycling technologies such as pyrolysis, where plastic waste is converted to oil, hydrocarbon gas, and carbon black.

The technologies are predicted to increase the recycled content in Nestlé’s bottled water packaging to 35% and its overall product packaging to 15% by 2025, the company claimed.

Pilot recycling schemes will start in 11 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, with the long-term aim to expand them globally.

Magdi Batato, executive vice president, head of operations at Nestlé, said: “Plastic waste is a challenge that requires an ecosystem of solutions all working simultaneously. This partnership is another specific step to accelerate our efforts in addressing the critical issue of plastic waste.

“Leveraging on Veolia’s technology and expertise, we will start with pilot projects in multiple countries, with the intention of scaling these up globally.”

This partnership is part of series of schemes and improvements Nestlé has introduced to address plastic pollution, including developing alternative sustainable packaging materials, helping stop plastic leakage into the environment through global operations, and driving sustainable behaviour.

Laurent Auguste, senior executive vice-president for development, innovation and markets at Veolia, said: “I am very pleased and welcome the opportunity of this partnership with a global F&B leader like Nestlé, in the quest for a more circular economy of plastics. Veolia’s collaborative efforts align with its aims as a founding member of the AEPW. Antoine Frérot, Veolia CEO and vice chairman of the AEPW, emphasised that change “requires the participation of everyone across the entire value chain”.
