Ben & Jerry’s wants to create a CBD-infused ice cream – if it’s made legal to add the ingredient to food in the US.
The ice cream maker said it is hoping to make CBD-infused ice cream a reality if the ingredient is legalised by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the marijuana plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another key compound found in cannabis plants, CBD does not get users high.
The somewhat controversial ingredient has been hailed as a hot food trend for 2019, according to a survey by the US National Restaurant Association.
The FDA currently prohibits adding CBD to food and beverages but the regulatory body has announced a public hearing into legalising CBD-infused foods on 31 May. Ben & Jerry’s said it had submitted comment to the FDA in support of legalisation.
If legalised, Ben & Jerry’s said it plans to use sustainably-sourced CBD from the brand’s home state of Vermont.
It said: “Values-led sourcing is an important part of our process when we churn up new ice cream innovations. By using high-quality, sustainably-sourced ingredients, we support our linked prosperity model, ensuring that everyone involved with making our flavors — from the cocoa farmers to the Scoop Shop scoopers — is positively impacted.”
The brand has developed its linked prosperity model to promote positive working practices at each stage of the ice cream manufacturing process, including ingredients sourcing and purchasing, manufacturing and community support.
Ben & Jerry’s sources its brownies from Greyston Bakery in New York, which has an innovative open-door hiring policy. Prospective employees are given the chance to work, regardless of educational background, work history, or past social barriers, such as incarceration, homelessness, or drug use.
CBD has also become an increasingly popular ingredient in beauty products and medicines. In 2018, the Cannabis Trades Association UK said the number of CBD users doubled over the previous year, from 125,000 to 250,000 users.
It is claimed CBD can relieve inflammation, provide pain relief and reduce anxiety.
