Logistics zone to position Saudi Arabia as global hub

22 October 2019

Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of what will be the kingdom’s largest integrated logistics zone – set to cover more than 2m square metres in its first phase.

Mawani, the Saudi Ports Authority, launched the Al Khomra Logistics Zone to provide advanced infrastructure and help position Saudi Arabia as a global logistics hub. It’s all part of the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to shift the kingdom away from dependence on fossil fuels.

The announcement of the zone came during the Saudi Logistics Conference that took place between 13 and 15 October 2019 in Riyadh.

President of Mawani, Saad bin Abdulaziz Alkhalb, described Al Khomra as a major leap for the logistics sector in Saudi Arabia. He said the zone would be close to international trade routes with a strategic location near Jeddah Islamic Port, making it a major hub connecting the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Its location would also give it access to the modern road network connecting the port, King Abdulaziz International Airport and the planned Saudi Landbridge Project, as well as several other major roads in the kingdom.

Its position on the Red Sea coast, a major passageway for more than 13% of global maritime trade, would make it a vital hub on the Silk Road maritime trade route, launched as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, he said.

He added that the new zone is expected to open up new investment and business opportunities, promote strategic partnerships with the private sector, develop maritime trade and enhance Saudi operational and logistics services.

“Mawani launched a strategic plan to optimise the massive potential and capacity of Saudi Arabia’s ports,” said a Mawani spokesperson, “through offering integrated logistics services, advanced bonded and re-export zones and competitive world-class services to the private sector.”
