The biggest myth?

12 April 2007
You may have glanced at today's Supply Management cover article listing the top ten myths of purchasing, all of which ring true to some extent. But which myth is the most common misconception? I might be tempted to choose Purchasing is not well paid. Looking at the last few salary surveys, purchasing is now being handsomely rewarded. Certainly in comparison with journalism (although anything is well rewarded compared to journalism!).But I find Purchasing is a strategic function to be the biggest myth amongst professionals that I meet. I definitely think its true to say that most sectors do not yet view purchasing as a strategic function, even if the profession itself does - just look at the lack of purchasing board level appointments. Myth-buster Luc Volatier comments that "it has a long way to go" and "it can't achieve this until it builds respect and credibility". Many buyers believe it has already done this - do you agree?
