Coming to the government's aid

An embarrassing investigation for the government reveals that up to 5,000 illegal immigrants were unwittingly cleared to work as security guards for the Metropolitan police, and at ports and airports.

Since 1999, employers have been compelled to check on the status of immigrants they employ, but this has not applied to the Security Industry Authority, which employed the immigrants. The Home Office confirms that checks have been strengthened since earlier this year.
