Complicated delivery

4 October 2007

This week SM’s adviser panel was asked:

Suppliers to my firm usually use third party couriers for deliveries. Despite spelling out specific delivery requirements, we often find deliveries problematic due to a 'can't do' attitude from the carrier. What action can we take with our suppliers to ensure their couriers don't let us both down?

Commercial buyer, Midlands

Our advisers said –

* ask how the supplier intends to address the problem - if they do not come up with a solution be prepared to offer suggestions.

* try to find out exactly what the problems are within your supplier's organisation and that of the fourth party. You can't fix what you don't know is broken.

* discuss with legal colleagues the best way to enforce compliance with your requirements.

Can you offer any other advice?
