Government IT spending has come in for a bit of criticism over the last month or so. Given the current economic climate, the press has got hold of stories on cost overruns and lengthy delays to technology programmes.

All the reports have highlighted the inevitable price to the taxpayer, which the Times estimates could be as much as £18.6 billion.

This week we ran a story on Conservative party plans put and end to government "IT white elephants" by capping technology projects at £100 million and introducing more open source software. It hopes the plan would help save £600 million.
