It seems Wal-Mart has stolen a march in the retail sector with its new scheme to map the entire lifecycle of each of its products.
It's a huge and important project which procurement is playing an important role in by questioning suppliers on their green credentials.
I like the simplicity of asking each vendor 15 direct questions
on issues such as the waste, carbon emissions and labour standards. Armed with the information, Wal-Mart will slap ratings on its goods, so customers can make informed decisions.
It is encouraging to hear buyers are key to these efforts, and underlines how important procurement is to the sustainability debate.
What do you make of the 15 questions? Is this something you would do with your suppliers?
