A job in the sun

27 May 2009
You don’t need me to point out that the UK jobs market is a little tough at the moment. And for those buyers who have lost their job in the past six months, finding another might prove very difficult. The fact is, fewer organisations are recruiting. Unfortunately it is simple as that. But not everybody may be prepared to wait for the “green shoots” of recovery to appear in the UK and for the jobs market to spring back into life. There are opportunities elsewhere in the world. And that is why in this issue we are offering some general advice in the 28 May edition of SM for buyers who may be considering a stint overseas. Who hasn’t fantasised about ditching the leaden skies and commuter grind for a more agreeable life somewhere warm? And while working in an office in a city elsewhere in the world may not in many ways be that different to what you are used to, it will be a chance to broaden skills, and could be a great experience. As our article makes clear, there is not a Shangri-la nation where abundant vacancies and a superb lifestyle are just waiting for your arrival. But the jobs outlook isn’t as bad elsewhere and for some this may provide an opportunity. And equally we are not trying to force SM readers to the four corners of the earth, but as figures from the Office for National Statistics showed last week, thousands of Britons are already emigrating and the current economic climate isn’t slowing down that trend. * Expenses have barely been off the front pages over the past couple of weeks and, as you’ll see in our latest First Person, in the new edition Stefan Stern has turned his attention to it. And we’d like to hear from you about some of the more outlandish claims you’ve heard, been asked to approve or even made. No need to name names but we’ll include the best ones on www.supplymanagement.com and in a future issue of the magazine.
