The walk of shame

8 May 2009
Shaming your politicians into action is in the news again this morning, as details of further scandals about MPs expenses appear in the UK newspapers. And it the same is going on in the US. The American Small Business League, which has been exasperated by politicians’ lack of action over the way government contracts are diverted to large corporations, yesterday sent a birthday cake to a group of politicians. The cake was decorated with the words: “Happy sixth anniversary small business contracting fraud.” This action also brought to mind the tale of the supplier who sent his buyer a  “one year old” birthday card when his payment was a year late. I do wonder whether these tactic actually works though? After all, nobody likes being embarrassed so it’s hardly likely to endear your cause to the person. Have you ever used “shame” tactics effectively?
