Unusual sources

17 November 2009
Newsgathering is not always a straightforward task. Trawling through sources for an elusive procurement angle is peppered with false starts and dead ends. It makes it all the more exciting when a story turns up unexpectedly. For example, yesterday's piece on the Tories' plans for PFI deals made itself known as I was blithely flicking through my Sunday paper. But perhaps the most unusual lead I have uncovered also resulted in a story yesterday. Our piece on buyers at the South African Parliament being temporarily suspended was first found on the Classic FM website. A conscientious journalist posted the news on the website, hoping to grab the eye of some blissful listeners. Not exactly the captive audience we have at SM. Has your work ever been supported from an unusual source?
