I want to tell you about crisps. Well, it a potato project to be precise.
PepsiCo UK & Ireland, the company behind Walkers crisps and other brands, has just published its Environmental Sustainability Update
for this year.
This report highlights where CSR pledges are on track, where partial success has been achieved and where limited or no progress has been made.
Among work that’s underway, the company has started to develop technology to capture the water extracted from potatoes during slicing and frying, to treat it and reuse it.
I love this idea. Potatoes need lots of water to grow. They then need more to be cleaned and processed. In fact – according to the International Starch Institute, freshly dug potatoes are essentially 75 per cent water. But this project wants to ensure where possible that water is recycled.
It is part of a long-term aim to “move to zero water intake at all of our Walkers Crisps manufacturing sites within 10 years, starting with our Leicester plant, eliminating the need to bring mains water onto our sites”.
