Renault boss faces the negotiation of his life

21 September 2009

The World Motor Sport Council meets today to decide what action should be taken against Renault for the alleged misconduct that took place at last year’s grand prix in Singapore.

Facing down the 26-member board will be the chairman of the F1 team and former buyer, Bernard Rey. He took over as boss at the racing team in 2007, having previously headed up purchasing at both Renault and its alliance partner Nissan. He began his career in purchasing in 1980, before rising through the ranks at the firm to reach his current position, yet I can't imagine this is the sort of situation he thought he would find himself in when he took up the role.

It is not known what punishment the sports governing body is expected to hand the team, but it’s likely Rey will have to employ all the negotiation skills he has learnt as a buyer to shield his team from the worst possible outcome.
