Light aircraft

9 April 2010
What has wings but cannot fly? What has a gun that cannot shoot? And what has wheels that do not turn? Answer: fake military “hardware”. Yes, this is the story (not released on 1 April, although I still don’t quite believe it) that the Russian defence ministry is apparently procuring the services of a balloon manufacturer to make inflatable decoys of tanks and fighter jets. From the air (and satellite surveillance) they look just like the real thing and apparently their task is to make the place look heavily fortified and protect combat units by distracting attention away from the real thing. Check out the pictures here. What strange things have you had to buy?
