Books in store

19 August 2010
As workers have abandoned their colleagues and flown, sailed or driven off on holiday, suitcases and valises will be packed with books to keep them busy on the beach or by the pool. CIPS president Shirley Cooper will be reading the late Michael Crichton’s climate change thriller State of Fear, incoming president Peter Rushton will be reading Dale Carnegie’s multimillion seller How to Win Friends and Influence People (in preparation for his presidential term, perhaps?). And Amanda Earnshaw, senior sourcing manager at JP Morgan, is tackling Bill Bryson’s mammoth At Home. A survey of MPs revealed Peter Mandelson’s memoir The Third Man was the most popular choice, but non-work related titles such as the Stieg Larsson trilogy also proved popular. I think buyers would also benefit from a summer shortlist of books to help them develop their career, relax and unwind or impress the good-looking guy or girl on the towel next to them at the beach. Which summer reads would you recommend?
