At the CIPS annual dinner last week president Shirley Cooper made a reference to previous president Gerry Walsh’s philosophy of “pay it forward” – the concept of “one good turn deserves another” setting off a chain reaction of good turns.
But recently scientists have found one good turn actually is the catalyst for three more good deeds from others – which either you or others will benefit from.
“Cooperative behaviour is contagious and it spreads from person to person to person. When people benefit from kindness they ‘pay it forward’ by helping others who were not originally involved, and this creates a cascade of co-operation that influences dozens more in a social network,” said professor James Fowler of the University of California.
This seems like a positive message for a Monday morning, so why not make it your aim to do a good deed for somebody today, and maybe they will be one of the ones to “pay it forward”.
