Understated success

15 September 2011
Well, this year’s CIPS SM Awards certainly appeared to be less boisterous. Even with more people in the room than ever before, this year’s audience appeared relaxed and calm in comparison to the raucous mob (and I write that with no disrespect intended) that came along last year. Compere for the evening Miranda Hart rarely had to hush the audience and even the winners seemed slightly restrained when collecting their prizes – although I’m sure the celebrations really got underway later on in private, away from the gaze of SM reporters. Without intending to read too much into the reasons for this, perhaps this was indicative of the post-riot society in which we now live in. Perhaps it was because the Caravan Club (who provoked such a huge roar from last year’s audience) weren’t nominated this year. Or maybe the wine wasn’t flowing quite as freely or as quickly as it was a year ago. Although looking at the state of some of the people staggering out of the Grosvenor Hotel in the early hours of this morning, I think we can rule the latter out.
