Tuned in and turned on

14 December 2012
We are a nation of data-hungry internet shoppers according to a report released this week. The UK tops the list of using the internet on the move with the average UK smartphone owner using 424mb of data per month, compared with the tech-friendly Japanese lining up second with a monthly average of 392mb. We also take the lead in online shopping with an average spend of £1,083 per year, compared with Australia, which has the second highest at £842. These findings are revealed in Ofcom’s seventh International Communications Market Report, which examines take-up, availability, price and use of broadband, landlines, mobiles, TV and radio across 17 major countries as at December 2011. The analysis shows the price of UK communication services is still the cheapest of all the countries in the report, but the gap is beginning to narrow. Overall prices in the UK have remained stable, but other countries are showing a fall in pricing, particularly in mobile phone services. However, with one-sixth of all UK web traffic now coming from mobile devices, 58 per cent of the population owning a smartphone device and 62 per cent of 18–24 year olds using their smartphones to access social networking sites, we are the global leaders in embracing new technology.
