Let’s face it, this week has been a struggle for those of us having to get back on the work treadmill. But it is not until the third Monday in January that we hit an all-time low. Known as the most depressing day of the year - and dubbed ‘blue Monday’ – this is when all our good intentions for a healthy diet and exercise regime have lost momentum and we fall back to slouching on the sofa, whinging about the miserable weather and lack of sunlight. This year, a mental health charity has decided to fight the gloom with a new campaign where they are asking everyone to wear their brightest clothes to work on 21 January. Mental Health Research UK (MHRUK) wants to raise awareness of depression and seasonal affective disorder as well as lifting the mood for all on this day. It said despite our increasingly lengthy winters, most people tend to wear dark clothes, especially to work. So, starting this year they intend to make a big visual impact on Blue Monday, urging people to inject some unexpected colour to their wardrobe and renaming the day ‘blooming Monday’.

The charity wants workplaces to get involved, and details of how to contribute can be found on the website.
