While six-figure bonuses and bottles of Bollinger appear to hold the key to motivating those on the trading floors of investment banks and hedge funds, those in more modest areas of work require slightly lower key incentives.
A survey of 2,000 managers by the Institute of Leadership and Management
(ILM) found that injecting a bit of sunshine into their day doesn’t require such audacious gifts as a 1990 VV Francaise
Their spirits can be lifted with such simple offerings as free tea and coffee – a delight for 48 per cent. Even on their special day, a birthday cake is all it takes, with 51 per cent putting this as their top treat.
But it’s not all about Tetley and triple chocolate gateaux. The survey also found that simple gestures such as ‘thank you’ and ‘well done’ to colleagues when deserved can go a long way in improving the office vibe. In contrast, communicating via e-mail rather than talking to those close by, has the potential to puncture morale.
In the words, of Charles Elvin, ILM chief executive: “When it comes to boosting team morale, small things can make a difference.”
