Flying the Australian flag

Andrew Pring © Akin FalopeOne of the hallmarks of procurement professionals is they never lose their desire to keep learning. And one of the best ways to keep deepening understanding of this most complex of practices is to study how professionals in other countries go about their business. To paraphrase Rudyard Kipling, what know they of procurement who only their own nation’s procurement know?

It is in that vein that we take an in-depth look this month at Australia’s approach to securing best value in purchasing, combined with a revealing profile of the new CIPS President, Craig Lardner, the first Australian to take up the chains of office.
What comes through clearly is an intense commitment to teamwork and understanding the needs of business partners – which augurs well for future developments in this fast-changing country.

The pace of change is equally evident in a new potentially epoch-making initiative unveiled by CIPS group chief executive David Noble recently for licensing the profession. As he explains in his column, procurement’s authority would be elevated significantly by this new qualification; and its ability to always do the right thing strengthened in a way that would benefit the entire business world. Let’s hope it wins the support it deserves in C-Suites everywhere.

CIPS members will, no doubt, be offering their views on how best to proceed in what’s likely to prove a lively debate over licensing the profession. While we wait to hear their thoughts on that, Supply Management would also be very interested
to hear readers’ views on the magazine they’re currently perusing. Like any professional practitioner, we’re obsessed with quality and delivering customer satisfaction – and the best way to achieve that is to ask for your feedback.

It’s a win-win move – if we can improve, you get an even better read, and you might also be lucky in our prize draw. So please do take part in the survey.
